If you’re thinking of seeking a human services degree, you may be interested in knowing there are three specializations most educational institutions offer. These specializations are:
- Community Health
- Human Services Leadership and Management
Gerontology is for individuals who want to help the elderly. It focuses on the mind and body of the older population. Topics having to do with socialization, research, and long term care are also covered.
Most people who specialize in gerontology choose careers in case management, social work, or home health.
The community health specialization is for those that want to help people learn and use resources available to improve their life. For example, they may inform individuals about housing programs to help pay for rent or mortgage. They may help people fill out paperwork for Medicare, or go through the process of claiming disability.
People who specialize in community health work in social work, public health, and mental health facilities. Some will own their own practice and provide counseling and case management services.
Human Services Leadership and Management
This specialization is best for people who want to work indirectly with people. The courses teach best practices of running a long term care center, how public health departments function, marketing for social policy, fundraising, and other topics that have to do with supporting resources for people in need of services.
People specializing in leadership and management, work in medical centers, senior living facilities, and schools. They often work with the disadvantaged, abused, and mentally or physically disabled.
Human services degree programs prepare students to help the community in many ways. With these three specializations, it’s possible to see that there are many different ways to use the information learned in the program you choose. To decide which specialization you’d like to pursue, consider volunteering or shadowing someone in each type. By putting yourself in the setting, you could end up figuring out which one would make you the happiest.
